Windows 8 was an abomination beyond words; WORSE than VISTA and ME combined. It's just too bad it took them a year to fix things. Win 8.1 isn't all that bad. (For better or worse, I still have 8.1 on two auxiliary computers I use about once a month or so; to be honest, in a LOT of ways, I like it BETTER than Win 10. It sure boots up FAST!)

Believe ANYTHING M$ says? NEVER. Why, it was Bill Gates who said "no one will ever need than 640 kB...."

Most of those are terminals connected to the network Main Brain.

    Many are Diskless.

All of the best computes back then were some version of Unix. Linux wasn't very viable at the time.

One of the more interesting super computers, at the time, was from Thinking Machines Corporation. When I went to Boston, to learn how to manage the operating system, we used a configuration that had 1024 CPUs. The CPUs could be allocated and assigned to various users (mostly MIT) for their processing jobs. If you wanted more CPUs, you had to be nice to the administrators. We could be bought. Too bad Thinking Machines couldn't make a descent profit.

Meanwhile I'm angry at why all the software on Linux is converting over to crap like Docker or SNAP.

Trouble is that Linux is still quite fragmented compared with Windows or MacOS - the easiest way to arrive at a trouble-free install routine is to ship a virtual environment so that the developer can be sure of what his software is going to see...

Does anyone know if Win11 needs aditional virus protection, and if so, will it let anything not from M$ operate on it?
    (Currently running Norton 360)

Not really, since its "bones" are still Windows-based code, so you're good-to-go.
