What is your favorite mode in ham radio? (you can pick as many as you like!)

  1. Continuous Wave Morse Cose (CW) traditional, old school and still way cool!

  2. Single Side Band (SSB) great for HF nets and conversation

  3. Frequency Modulated (FM) - perfect for our HTs, repeaters and vehicles!

  4. Amplitude Modulated (AM)- aaahh the warm glow of TUBES, and a lot of fun talking!

  5. FT-8- lots of QSOs and DX with just a little power required!

  6. DMR or D-Star- the fusion of the World Wide Web with Radio.... seems like fun to me!

  7. PSK-31- sort of like RTTY, with a small but great bunch of afficianados!

  8. RTTY- that great old mode, that used to send the news all over the world!

  9. Slow Scan TV- Yes indeed... sending pics over the radio!

  10. OTHER- There are a lot of others to list.... so which one appeals to YOU?

Dave, no «State of the Hobby» results for 2020 and due survey for 2021?
If only we could get a detailed scan of South America, to handle it to Authorities «Look, results of what you've been doing for decades to our great hobby»

OK.... the survey is getting more interesting! CW is still the King, with SSB (voice) now strongly in second place. FT-8 is now tied with FM for third place.... and DSTAR / DMR is now on the board with 4.3% ! OTHER is also on the move, now with 8.7%.

As the sample grows, so does the accuracy. Of course I'm not a statistician or a poll taker, so I have no idea how big the sample must be before we call it "valid". Even so, some of the results are clear even to the untrained brain. :D

CW may not be the most used mode on any given day, unless it's a contest weekend. But even though it would be hard to quantify, I believe CW is the most beloved mode by hams who are long time users of multiple modes. I know it is for me. Without being critical of those who don't, I wish every CW op would encourage every ham to make the effort and become a CW op. I know there are many who unenthusiastically began learning to use CW on a whim and found it to be a much more enjoyable activity than they anticipated.

Better pull the plug on your computer when you go to bed.

There's no telling what it might do completely on it's own during the night. Sleep with one eye open.

    My favorites in order.

    FT8.
    SSB
    CW
    RTTY
    PSK31
    FM

Never have done AM, but it sounds interesting.

Also I have done receiving with SSTV, but so far haven't transmitted anything but I intend to.

Also need to try some of the other digital modes, like Hellscriber.

    And some day, maybe satellites.
