What is your favorite mode?

What is your favorite mode in ham radio? (you can pick as many as you like!)

  1. Continuous Wave Morse Cose (CW) traditional, old school and still way cool!

  2. Single Side Band (SSB) great for HF nets and conversation

  3. Frequency Modulated (FM) - perfect for our HTs, repeaters and vehicles!

  4. Amplitude Modulated (AM)- aaahh the warm glow of TUBES, and a lot of fun talking!

  5. FT-8- lots of QSOs and DX with just a little power required!

  6. DMR or D-Star- the fusion of the World Wide Web with Radio.... seems like fun to me!

  7. PSK-31- sort of like RTTY, with a small but great bunch of afficianados!

  8. RTTY- that great old mode, that used to send the news all over the world!

  9. Slow Scan TV- Yes indeed... sending pics over the radio!

  10. OTHER- There are a lot of others to list.... so which one appeals to YOU?

As the survey rolls on, a clear trend has been established. As of Sunday morning, 57.7% like CW, 23% like FT-8 and SSB, with FM and RTTYcoming in with 15.4%. PSK-31 and AM have 11.5%. SSTV and OTHER have 3.8%.... while DStar / DMR have zero. I guess nobody on the Zed likes those.

So far, it's been interesting.... but it ain't over yet. A bunch of DSTAR folks might just show up and skyrocket their favorite mode up to first palce. Who knows what will happen?

SURVEY UPDATE! It looks like SSB has gained a lead over FT-8! That seems reasonable to me, but some folks may have other opinions.

Well, I included CW in the list although I'm terrible at it. It is the only mode of operation for which a QSO gives me any sense of achievement these days.

I like DStar, but it is dying on its feet round here. Not much point in being the only user of a mode!

Strictly speaking, FT-8 is SSB - the difference is that with FT-8 there is no human involvement - two computers talking SSB to each other - a bit like R2D2 chatting to his brother on 40m.

yes it is... but it distinctly different than SSB voice, which is what most folks think about when talking about SSB. However, to avoid confusion, if I ever do another survey like this one I'll label the SSB as "SSB voice".

I have a QRP rig and wire antennas on a small lot with a high noise floor, so CW and FT8 are nearly my only choices for HF.

Actually no. Unless you are using a technically inferior sound card connection, you can modulate FT-8 directly centered at IQ baseband using a decent SDR rig (or even just a Arduino plus a direct HF frequency synthesizer chip), so the modulation would be shaped FSK.
