Using too much band space when working splits. Why are they allowed to do it??

When DX Stations come up on the air, why is it that they can use so much of the band as they do.

An example is today (10 March 2018)
    - TN5R on 18.145 working up 5 -15 kcs. So effectively taking up 20 kcs. of what is a small band - only 57 kcs on SSB as it is.

Many times we hear this happening and no-one seems to worry . What about the rest of us who would like to use the band as well......

    Your thoughts please.

The Frequency Cops are too busy shouting or sending “UP” to pay attention to the split.

    Why else?

Most of the time, the band is under-utilized and some lament that lack of activity.

Here, we have someone complaining about a crowd spread over 20KHz.

Tha moral of this story is...

    ...there’s always something.

Seems that this complaint crops up at least once during every major and a good many not-so-major DXpeditions.

That the rest of the band is usually available, to say nothing of adjacent bands being available, seems to be beside the point.

It always seems to boil down to “how DARE someone else have fun when I do NOT approve!”

Bands are only available when they are open and when not being used all over each band for contests.
Surely the organisers of all contests / DXpeditions should consider their operating procedures and respect the
rest of us by not using all the band - leave part of it for non contest - DX chasers.

It's not that I don't approve of DX stations but on a small band such as 17m. or 12m. we should all consider others.
After all not all of us are after bits of paper to say we got a 59 report in what ever country it was.......

That last sentence certainly implies you don't approve...

Regardless, there are no contests on 17M and the attached band shot is indicative of how 'crowded' the band is during the day.

Working split doesn't take up much more frequency spectrum than not doing so...3 kHz or so for the DX station. And not working split means there's usually far more QRM that goes on for a longer time. Working split, a DX station can work a big pileup quickly and efficiently, and reduce the time a lot of space is taken up.
