Kenwood seems to have problem with their phone, I'm not having any luck contacting them.
It appears that the errors I'm getting are a PLL unlock problem. I removed the PLL board and recapped it entirely (The fully realigned the rig). The unit ran much longer (for hours) but leaving it on all night the same problem resurfaced. There was a Kenwood service bulletin regarding installation of the TCXO/SO2, however that did not apply to my rig. It appears the problem most likely is with the PLL board. The Trimmer Cap for the VCO lock is really looks and just barely touching cause the voltage to jump significantly, this could be a trimmer cap issue. I'm still troubleshooting this problem, and am just posting here to keep a record of what I've found for future reference.
I responded to your e-mail. In addition to what I said; If the display is working it's not a PLL issue. All of the PLL's are tied to the unlock line and will give a message. Now being said the DDS IC's are not tied to the unlock and the only way to check them is with a 'scope. That or study the map and see which circuit each one it's feeding and if it's a PLL and if it's not showing unlock That DDS is working.
Roger that. The display does fail, and there is nothing on the screen and many of the functions stop working, but not every time. Sometimes is shows the ERR- (X) on the screen briefly, but it goes away and the radio works.
Your description is a leaky battery. Data lines run under it.
Okay, I am going to investigate that. Thanks so much for your response.
