A long shot as I have found nothing on this combo. My problem is that the Mic gain, pro in and pro out need to be near 100% to make this mic work. Mic works fine on all other transceivers. I was wondering if any preamplification would be a benefit and if so what mic preamp would be suitable. All other mics are fine on this 480 also, so I have ruled out faulty TX audio and faulty mic, maybe it is a bad mix.

That seems odd. I'm using a Heil Studio One on the same radio at our club station, no processor, at 50% gain. The element should be similar to the Heritage. You may want to drop Bob an email and see if that sounds right. He usually answers right away. Maybe its a cable issue?

just got an email from Bob now, told me to get a W2IHY or try a mic amplifier...nothing wrong with the mic as it performs well on my icom IC-736

That seems really strange, as the IC-736 doesn't have a mic preamp at all. It's designed for electret mics. Does the Heritage have the ICM (electret) element or a studio (dynamic) element? Heil builds them either way. If it's an electret, you will need to supply bias voltage to the mic through the 480's mic jack in order to make it work. +8v is available on Pin 2.

You are correct with the 736. I had to use an outboard mixer and feed the audio through the accessory socket. My heritage is the non electret version.

Well, you could always try the mixer on the 480, or one of these:

I use one of those with my Audix i5 (Shure SM-57 copy) feeding audio into my computer's sound card for recording with my guitar amp. Probably a little more HiFi than needed for ham radio, but it should raise the levels nicely to feed the 480. I'm still very surprised that it's even necessary on that radio. Take care!
