There may be store-bought solutions that I don't know about, but you can do this with almost any receiver.

You would have to tap the first IF or one that's wide enough to give you the view you want. The sdr will be tuned to the frequency of that IF. This way the center frequency on the waterfall is always what your radio is tuned to. Some sdr software will let you change the panadapter view to show frequency offest instead of frequency.

Some rigs have an IF out on the back just for this. I haven't owned one and can't remember any specific models.

My rig is a Kenwood TS-590SG. It has two small connectors on the marked DRV and the other RX ANT. I don't know which one it is, but I understand from the 590SG owners group that one of those two is where the SDR box is plugged in. (if that's what you are referring to) See, I told you I was ignorant of all this stuff. I've a lot to, I've a whole lot to learn.

Ok, I don't know the 590, but the fundamental issue is that you will effectively have the SDR receiver active at the same time that the transmitter is outputting 100w or more. There is lots of scope for doing serious damage to the input stages of the SDR if there is not adequate protection for it. Some transceivers come with a suitably protected output socket, there are kits available to retrofit to others and MFJ make an external switch box that can do it too. Make sure you understand it and take appropriate measures for your radio before you try transmitting with an SDR in the shack - otherwise you risk expensive damage...

Thanks, Martin. I'll share your concerns with some of those who use the SDR on the 590 and see what they tell me.

That's one benefit of tapping the IF. The SDR is not receiving anywhere near your transmit frequency.

I don't know what you mean by "tapping the IF".

Inside the radio are a number of stages passing the IF signal. Pick a point in that path and hardware connect a wire to a connector mounted on the outside of the radio cabinet. Shielding, Isolation and level condition not include, but just trying to address the basic of “tapping the IF”.

    HDSDR is my favorite.

You can control and stream audio over your computer network.

You can have the SDR connected to a RPi and control it remotely if you want to.

Hmmmmm. All that is above my pay grade at this point. :D

No worries... With internet access and interest in electronics, pay grade upgrades are possible on a casual timeline plan. As a kid Dick Tracy was a comic I read from time to time. Radio on his wrist, never happen. Current day... Apple watch on my wrist. Who would think it? While flight from Wright Brothers to space has been a staggering change in a short time, from vacuum tube to what we have today is just as staggering and in some ways less notable as hidden behind the front panel.
    It's all GOOD! :)
