Be prepared to answer THESE questions:

    1) My uncle in Nebraska has his HAM. Do you know him?

    2) My uncle in Nebraska has his HAM. Can we call him?

    3) Can you get police calls on this?

    4) How far can you talk on this?

    5) What am I saying - BEEP BEEP BEEBEEP BEEP BEEBEEBEEBEEP BEEP BEEP!

    6) I saw a movie where they talked on HAM to somebody in the past. You can't REALLY do that, right??

    7) Oooh! Can I talk on it??

    8) Are you allowed to cuss on the HAM?

    9) Can I still talk on it?

    10) Hey, I'm sorry. Can I stay here if I'm quiet this time?

    11) What's... THIS... button do??

Yes, you can talk to your father who's been dead for thirty years, but only if you use a Heathkit receiver with the top cover off and the microphone plugged into the headphone jack.

HAW!!! Yes! I remember pointing out to the XYL that he was talking into a receiver.

On the other hand, I've never tried that, so who am I to say it wouldn't work?

They also tripped the vox (when they weren't working full-duplex) from across the room.

I'll restrain myself from listing all the silliness in that movie. There's another thread that cover that quite thoroughly. Including how people with NO familiarity with the equipment could unbox everything and get it on the air just like that. WHOOOOPS, I said I'd leave it at that. My bad!

    Out!

Our local radio club operates in public every chance we get. We have set up at the local county fair for a weeks stay. Field Day operations have been on the grounds of the Historical Society and Museum for many years and at several parks before that. We have run special event calls for several events like Wood County's 200th anniversary, Ohio courthouses on the Air and the last was the King Midget Car Jamboree in Bowling Green, Ohio this summer. We made a club banner about 8' long and 2' high which we hang in front of the table with the club name and call letter on it. We have printed brochures, with photos, about the club ready to hand out to those interested. If the bands are active, there is always time to allow folks to talk to another station. We are in the process of mailing the brochures to all license holders with a local address, who are not members, including an invitation to attend a club meeting. We have a website and a Facebook presence.

The repeater systems are on the campus of BGSU and we invite students to our weekly nets and other activities. What to say to the public is not an issue. Answer questions honestly. Explain in simple terms what is going on. Be polite.

Because many hams have the personality and social skills of a potato. The linked thread is a perfect example of why ham radio is faintly embarrassing, someone says something disagreeable and out come the virtue signalers complaining they got touched on the frequency.

Of course speaking the truth here is a sure fire way to upset the man children and have them refuse to read your posts :)

I have found ALL the hobbies I have been involved in all contain the same characters, not all of them Potatos... but a few I've seen....

If it is Ham Radio, Electronics making, Car Cruz Club, Car Racing Club, Gun Club, RC Model Airplane Club, High Power Rocket Club; they all contain pretty much the same mix of "Characters" Of those we can Identify all those in the QRZ posting Hobby as well that match up. A+ to D- types and people in the Happy Middle; how many folks here ever took one of those HR personality type tests to get a job in the last 30 years. I know what Square of the 64 matrix I usually land in...
