A few weeks ago I was listening in on a local net in Pennsylvania with my HT, and when the net concluded two HAM's started chewing the rag. As the conversation progressed I learned that one of them was located somewhere in the UK and the other was in Australia. They were both VERY clear.

I have the Echolink App on my phone, and I know I can use it to link to Echolink repeaters anywhere and talk but is that what I was hearing from those two guys or is there a way to link my HT to a distant repeater? If that only works through an App, then the question arises why would someone from the UK and Australia pick an Echolink Repeater in the Pocono Mountains of PA to talk through a Phone App?

It may be as simple as that, but I feel like I'm missing something.

There is a local analog repeater here connected to Wires-X. I hear Hams from all over the world on that repeater.

This PowerPoint deck explains what you're missing:

    And BTW:
It's ham radio, not HAM radio.
    It's not an acronym.
    Don't use ALL CAPS.
    ;)
