For a long time now I've seen QST ads asking hams to donate radios to New York Junior High School 22. Now they are up to a half page. Surely all these donated radios aren't really needed or used at one school. Who is WB2JKJ and where is all this donated stuff going? Inquiring readers want to know.

I remember them from even back in the early 70's!

There are 18,346 501(c)3 organizations in New York City (or have the works "new" or "york" as the city) as listed on the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organizations-select-check

I looked at the entire list and could not find anything that might represent this organization beginning with the number 22, the letters "jr", the word "junior", the word "radio" (there is a Radio for Youth Foundation Inc. and Radio Foundation Inc. but neither of them appear to be associated with the Radio Club of Junior High School 22), the letters "rc" and wb2jkj" and could not find anything that might represent this organization.

Of course I could have easy missed it, but I could not find anything under the most obvious combination of words and numbers. Before giving anything to a "suspect" charitable organization, get their EIN number and request a Form W-9. Being the secretary of a 501(c)3 charitable foundation, we gladly provide that information to anyone who asks.

The school is now New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math.

The ad doesn't say there is a radio club AT the school. Or that the "teacher" works there (in fact he doesn't). It doesn't say your donations go to equip a radio station. In fact it doesn't say there are any kids involved at all. It simply says you get a tax credit for your donation. Oh, in the past, a couple of decades ago, there might have been these things, but not now. "Radios you can write off, kids you can't." How it benefits kids is a mystery.
The on air "classroom net" members are all OMs and YLs. No kids.

I just checked out WB2JKJ's QRZ page. It is kind of interesting. Here is one of the pics.

The first time I saw these ads made me think, why a Jr. High? Why not a Sr. High? I belonged to a Sr. High club, we're still friends, many of us go to Dayton together (2 of the gang celebrated 50 continuous years of attendance).

The thing that bothers me is the E-Ham posts date back to 2011, yet the ARRL still takes the ad money despite being a questionable organization. If they are not listed as a legitimate 501c3 charity yet claim they do in an ad, QST should have given them the boot by now.

Supposition can be entertaining but it seems if someone really wants to know, he could simply ask the QST Advertizing Dept.
