    In the UK part of the Licence conditions are that you need fail safes in place , so i am guessing that for most Auto FT8 would contravene their Licence conditions .

    I guess I'm officially an old fart now. Having done lots of FT8 in the past, it became a profoundly boring activity. It was more like a video game. Now it appears you can have someone play this particular video game on your behalf. Heck, you can probably rent the station online too. What a joyless miserable existence:(

    My ham radio life was resuscitated by an injection of 100% pure CW, delivered over QRP radios into homemade wire antennas. I pity those who never discover this path.

    While I don't do auto FT8, I have run auto responding modes being interrogated by another station which is legal in the ACDS sub bands. {no I never have ran a Winlink RMS, it was FSQcall}

    Anyway it is legal for example if you have VNC running on the computer and are monitoring it from time to time. Also if your radio has a TOT timer, if your USB port hangs up and keeps your radio in TX it's best for the TOT to shut it down; just like the 3min period TOT on a Repeater.

    Yes this thread seems to have come back from the dead.

    Is it acceptable? I really don't care. As long as those who do it adhere to the rules concerning the need for a control operator, etc., why should I? If that's how someone gets their jollies, so be it. Not my idea of a good time. But plenty wouldn't think what I have fun with--like a CW contest--is fun either. ;)

    The basic DXCC level is the only one that makes any intuitive sense to me. Oh, okay, I guess I can understand breaking it down by mode, so that there's DXCC for CW, SSB or whatever, but when you get to the band-specific awards it starts to seem so arbitrary. What's next, DXCC for contacts made on Tuesdays? After 4:00pm? While you're wearing a blue shirt? While wearing a hat? Where does it end?

    I do "Worked all states" all the time - on some nostalgic old Boat Anchor I just got working, on a HW-7 or HW-8, using CW, SSB, or just recently using QRP FT8 on a home-built Phaser 20. I find it a fun part of the hobby for me.

    Almost every aspect of amateur radio could be considered "dumb" or "lame" by someone somewhere sometime. Why would I care?? In the last ten years I've worked and confirmed all 50 states a dozen times - in every mode I've used: CW, SSB, RTTY, JT65, JT9, and FT8 .... and using nine different old and new radios.

    Where does it end? It's not a destination - it's a journey and it begins any time you personally say it begins, and it doesn't end until you personally say it ends. Why take the time to worry what other people think?

    Maybe you just need a new hobby.

    As Dave says, it ends when and where you say it ends. Who cares if someone has a digital endorsement? If you don't like it, don't do it and don't worry about it.

    And it doesn't even have to start if you don't want it to... ;)

    I wasn’t referring to the concept of catching the same fish multiple times in different reaches of the same river. Rather, the first 100 is a stepping stone toward Honor Roll or top of the HR which are milestones many long-time DX’ers consider the goal. See the forest rather than the first tree.

    I don't do it and don 't worry about it, but the ARRL always says it wants to get people interested in joining / participating in the hobby. Awards that make sense might be an asset in that case. People still wouldn't have to chase them, if they didn't want to.

    In what way does an endorsement for a specific mode or band DXCC not “make sense”?
    One might argue it’s all duplicative once you work one but people have been chasing and tracking SSB (phone) and CW DXCC totals since the 1940s.
    If it doesn’t “make sense” to you, that’s fine but it certainly does to lots of us. It clearly both incentivizes and enhances activity on every mode and band.
