Yes you can go Thunderbolt. and it works great.
Keep in mind that USBC and Thunderbolt ARE NOT the same thing.

That being said. USB 2.0 is way too slow IMHO and the interface to the Flex databus is not a 1:1 conversion if you were going to try to convert the radio internally.

If anything was to be hacked into a 3k or 5k it should be Ethernet.
I had a 1500 which runs on USB and it worked great but USB is the pits. Especially when you try to consider latency.
My 5K runs fine on my firewire desktop and my thunderbolt laptop.
I'm looking for a 3k for a go box setup.(even one that needs a firewire chip replacement)

Good to know about Ethernet over USB. I don’t have any problems with FireWire or my PCs. Guess I’ll just keep a clean install back-up HDD and quit worrying about it.

I’ve also thought about a 3K for a go box. It would rack mount nicely.

I think the flex 3k would be just fine.
I had two of them 10 or 12 years ago and really enjoyed them.
I think any computer made in the last five years would be more then adequate.
I have a anan 7000dle now and its more like the old flex radios then the new ones.

I was running my 3000 on a Pentium G2030 with 8MB, (Dell 660S) and, once I got the DPC issues ironed out it worked fine. I have no doubt that an i5 or i7 would give stellar performance. But I traded-in the 3000 on a 6300 when they first came out so I never did any more with the 3000.

I do recall that I found the PowerSDR software for the 3000 somewhat more to my liking than the SmartSDR for the 6300.

I like the KE9NS software the best for sdr operation (as opposed to rx only).
    Much better then the SmartSDR!
