I was in the Air Force, but I liked to sail too.

I miss "Kim II" -- a 38 foot wooden sloop I had in Hawaii in the mid 90's. Here she is docked at Hickam Harbor. My arm is on the mast, the other dude is a friend.

Me and my partner took it around Oahu once--counter clockwise. It took about 38 hours.

I also miss Katarina (a production 27 foot Catalina.) Had her in the mid 2000's in Florida. Here she is sails all the way out on the Indian River. (Almost down wind enough to go "wing on wing",)

It took a bit, but I finally got my XYL at the helm beating into the wind on the Indian River. She LOVED it once she got past the initial "scared to do it."

We went off shore regularly. Here we are about 8 miles out into the Atlantic.

    I miss sailing.

The formal term is Ship, but as slang, it was the Boat.

Much like calling the Aircraft, Jets, or Birds.

I use to want to construct a large (relatively) clinker built knarr, with a full cabin below the main deck....the xyl talked me out of it.

As my mother use to tell my wife in reference to me, "Watch him close....the Viking blood is strong in this one.". :)

Navy ships are sarcastically referred to as "targets"

The Aquarius (56m LOA) and the Sea Eagle II are fully automated sail boats that don't have a large (for their size) fuel drinking engine but are primarily dependent on the wind for propulsion. They both can do 24 hour operation with a lite crew of 3, carry a small (30-36') service boat, and displace 500+ tons. Are they boats or ships?

The Ngoni by Royal Huisman is 58m of fun loving, super high performance put together in a really slick sloop....a ship or a boat?

I kind of think calling it a ship, a boat, a dinghy, a .... is up to her master.

I clicked to the Transat web site (old time rag bag sailor here) and found dark print on dark backgrounds. I hit the back button 4 milliseconds later.

    "Sailing"

Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see
    Believe me

It's not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see
    Believe me

Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy, it gets the best of me
    When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphony
    Won't you believe me?

Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Well it's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see
    Really, believe me

Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Had a Windmill I bought well-used for almost nothing around 1970. A lot of sweat equity and Git-Rot put 'er back shipshape. An uncle had a Lightning he had purchased in the late '30s and I was only a few months old when I first went out on it. I crewed for another uncle in his Tanzer 16 because my Windmill had been modified to manuever better when beating.

I sold my sailboat several years later when I bought my horse.

While the new foil racers lack the grace and beauty of the old 12 Meter yachts, their performance is unbelievable.
